Vinalhaven, ME, United States
Dr. Helana E. Brigman graduated from Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2015 where she received her Doctor of Philosophy in English and minored in Women’s and Gender Studies. Before joining Vinalhaven School, Helana taught English at LSU for six years and tutored students in reading and writing at Columbia College’s Academic Skills Center for four years. When she is not teaching English, Helana writes recipes for her award-winning blog, Clearly Delicious, and is the author of the 2013 best-selling cookbook, The Fresh Table: Cooking in Louisiana All Year Round (LSU Press, Spring 2013). Originally from Rockland, Maine, Helana is excited to be a part of Vinalhaven’s island community. Her teaching goal is to help Vinalhaven’s students to think differently about traditional forms of reading and writing. In her personal time, Helana enjoys the works of Charles Dickens, running, fair isle knitting, and taking her dog Cara on walks to look at the island’s wind turbines.
